This page explains plainly what FixMyCredit.ca does, how we make money, and what you should expect after you request a free credit assessment. Credit repair and debt relief are areas where misleading promises are common, so we want to be clear about what we do and do not do.
We are not a lender, a trustee or a credit counsellor
FixMyCredit.ca is a free referral and information service. We do not lend money, we do not provide credit repair services ourselves, and we do not administer consumer proposals, bankruptcies or debt management plans. When you complete our free credit assessment form, we deliver your request to a licensed provider in our network, such as a Licensed Insolvency Trustee, a non-profit credit counselling agency, or a licensed lender for a debt consolidation loan, that serves your province and situation. That provider reviews your request, contacts you directly and explains your options. Any agreement is between you and that provider.
How we are paid
You never pay FixMyCredit.ca. Providers in our network pay us a referral fee when we send them a request or when a referred client proceeds with a service. That fee is how a free service stays free. It can influence which providers receive your request, but it does not change what you pay for any service, which the provider must disclose to you before you sign.
What no one can promise you
- No one can remove accurate, current information from your credit report. Only errors can be disputed, and you can dispute them yourself for free with Equifax and TransUnion.
- No one can guarantee a specific credit score increase, or that a creditor will accept a settlement or a proposal.
- Consumer proposals and bankruptcies can only be filed by a Licensed Insolvency Trustee regulated by the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy. Anyone else offering to “file” one for you is a middleman.
What to expect after you apply
- You complete our short assessment form. It asks only what providers need to understand your debts, income and province.
- We deliver your request to a licensed provider that serves your province and situation. The provider contacts you by phone or email, usually within one business day.
- The provider reviews your full situation with you and explains the realistic options, including their costs and their effect on your credit.
- You decide. There is no obligation, and you may decline or seek a second opinion at any time.
Things we will never do
- Ask you to pay a fee to FixMyCredit.ca, or ask for gift cards, e-Transfers or your online banking login.
- Promise to erase debts, delete accurate credit history or raise your score by a specific number of points.
- Sell your personal information.
Advance-fee requests from anyone claiming to represent us are a scam. Report them to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Our editorial standards
Guides on this site are written for Canadian readers, cite the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy and the credit bureaus where figures are given, and carry a visible last-updated date. They are general information, not financial or legal advice.
Complaints
If something has gone wrong with your experience on this site, use our contact page and we will respond within one business day. Complaints about a provider should go first to that provider, then to its regulator: the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy for trustees, or your provincial consumer protection office for credit counsellors and lenders. Privacy complaints can also go to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
